Westcoast, DMV, Chicago, East Coast, Dirty south; who has given us the best producers in the game? I understand that this a subjective question, but lets look deeper into it. Like artist the best is not defined by accolades, Grammy’s, American Music awards or iHeart Radio awards, it’s about the fans and who is in demand.
Over the years, we have heard some of the best producers from all over the U.S., but what region has given us the best. In my personal opinion, I tend to believe majority of our legendary producers hail from both the East and West Coast, but the new generation of the best producers reign from the South. When I say the South I am speaking from Texas to North Carolina. Dating from about 2003 to the present, the southern sound has slowly taken its position as the sound of hip hop. Although both Westcoast and Eastcoast have been making their presence felt, producers from the Midwest and the DMV area have also made headway. With producers such as Timbaland, Nottz, Lex Luger, Neptunes, Kanye West, and Young Chop to name a few these areas have made their presence felt.
In recent years, if you want a hit you come to the south. With Atlanta acting as the hub for southern music, the entire region has played a major part to why artist from all over have been looking to ride the southern wave. Travis Scott (Houston, TX), Cardo (Dallas, TX), Cool and Dre (Miami, FL), The Runners (Orlando, FL), ‘Mouse on tha Track’ (Baton Rouge, LA), Drumma Boy (Memphis, TN), and Big K.R.IT (Meridian, MS). Then there are the producers out of Atlanta, the home of the trap. Without naming every producer in the south 808 Mafia, London on da track, Ear Drummers, Mike Will, Nitti, DJ Spinz, and Black Metaphor. One thing about a number of producers from the south a number of their placements are with artists that do not hail from the south, which tells you how universal the southern sound has become.
There was a time when many people said that hip-hop was dead, other fans combated that comment by saying that it simply moved to the south. With that being said when it comes to production, currently the south has a choke hold on the game.
